Intravenous Vitamin and Mineral Therapy

This page is archived as of 8/14/06. Please click here for current practice information. We no longer administer IV therapies.

What is intravenous vitamin and mineral therapy?
Intravenous vitamin and mineral therapy involves the administration of a solution of vitamins and minerals through a vein in the arm. The intravenous solution generally contains relatively high doses of vitamin C (25 grams) along with various B vitamins, minerals and certain amino acids.

How do intravenous vitamins and minerals work?
The vitamins and minerals may replace nutritional deficiencies, act to improve the function of your cells and immune system, and help protect cells from damage or help decrease inflammation.

Why do vitamins and minerals need to be given intravenously?
Generally, it is preferable to administer vitamins and minerals orally. However, it is impossible to give high doses of certain vitamins such as Vitamin C by mouth without gastrointestinal side effects (diarrhea). Also, because of certain disease states which create malabsorption, it may be impossible to adequately absorb vitamins and mineral through the gastrointestinal tract.

For what conditions are intravenous vitamin and mineral infusions used?
The following conditions have been treated with intravenous vitamin and mineral infusions: Infectious conditions such as hepatitis, chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), cancer (as supportive treatment), and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis).

Is the treatment safe?
Intravenous vitamin and mineral treatment has been used safely by physicians for several decades. All the components of the solution are compounds natural to the body and generally pose no health risks.

How often will I need treatment?
The number of treatments will vary with the condition being treated. Most patients will require at least 8 to 10 treatments. Depending on the response, some patients will then go on to maintenance treatment.

What is being done to integrate intravenous vitamin and mineral therapy with conventional medical practice?
Dr. Halbert is currently involved in a research to investigate the effects of intravenous vitamins and minerals as treatment for a variety of chronic conditions. This research will help physicians to better understand how this type of therapy can effectively integrate with traditional treatments.

How can I make an appointment for intravenous vitamins and minerals infusions?
You must first have a medical evaluation to determine the appropriateness of this treatment for your condition.
