Alternative Medicine in Cancer Treatment

Many patients who have cancer actively explore alternative therapies. This can be a very confusing experience for most people. When integrating complementing therapies into the total care of an individual it is essential to keep in mind the following points.

No treatment can offer a cure for cancer, unless it has been successfully tested on large populations of patients in scientific studies.

To date, alternative treatments have not been adequately tested to make any definitive claims.

Alternative/complementary therapies can be used to support and strengthen the overall health of a patient with cancer. Some therapies may enhance general immune function, while others may aid in reducing symptoms such as pain, nausea and anxiety. Each individual requires a unique program of supportive therapies.

Supportive therapies at Preventive Medicine Group include:

  • Diet changes and nutritional supplementation
  • Intravenous Vitamin C and other nutrients
  • Photo oxidative therapy
  • Selected herbal medicines
  • Mind-body therapies including psychotherapy and imagery.
Other therapies to consider include homeopathy, acupuncture, and massage.

Nourishing the spirit and the psyche are extremely important. Spiritual practice, introspection and creative expression are just a few of the paths to experience a greater sense of connection.

Each patient would be best served by developing strong relationships with their oncologists, cancer surgeon and primary care physician.

At Preventive Medicine Group, we are not cancer specialists, but do have expertise in the application of a range of supportive complementary/alternative therapies that may benefit patients who have cancer.
