SCHMIDT-NIX
by Nicki Marian
A friend of mine, Judy Schmidt, and I landed Civil
Service jobs in the Western Union Office at
Camp Carson 'way back during WWII. Many of
the GI's were coming home from overseas and their
1st request was to send a telegram home 'now' to
their families. Our office was headed by a Sergeant,
and Judy and I were posted on the board with our
hours as "Schmidt-Nix". Another soldier drove us
in a special jeep to various sites at the camp to take
down telegrams to be sent to loved ones. Our
name became well-known and, when the jeep was
in sight, we could hear shouts, "Here come Schmidt-Nix!"
Tons of memories about that time in my life.
Oh, something about smuggling an officer in the
trunk of my big Dodge car off base .... never mind!
Let's get to Nicki.
